“Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems,” by Philip H. Smith, C.ENG., M.I.MECH.E., M.S.A.E., has gone into a revised edition (quite thick, with 246 pp.), which includes a new chapter on exhaust purification although inevitably the book is not entirely up to date, the latest Ford cross-flow head not being included. It covers very thoroughly the theory and practice of flowed inlet and exhaust systems, valve timing, pressure phenomena and pressure measuring apparatus, silencer design, racing methods with manifolding and multi carburetters, etc. The publishers are G. T. Foulis & Co. Ltd., 1-5, Portpool Lane, London, and the book costs 42s.

Three further titles have been issued in Christopher Trent’s “Motoring on Regional Byways” series, these covering the West Country, the Border Country and South of London. Each costs 25s. and is published by G. T. Foulis & Co. Ltd.

Sandy beaches can be seen at a glance in a new series of road maps now available at B.P. petrol stations. The ten maps, covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, cost is 6d. each. Colour codings on the maps indicate sandy and shingle beaches. There are also easy-to-follow references for other pursuits such as golf and race courses, yachting centres, motor-racing circuits and pot-holing and skiing centres. The scale is 1 inch : 4 miles. The maps are produced by the B.P. Retail Market Division of Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd.
