We thought it would be simple – ask Mercedes-AMG if we could photograph Lewis Hamilton’s 2018 title-winning helmet for our cover feature this month. It proved complex in the extreme, but finally we got the go ahead, under conditions of strict secrecy. It transpired that the drivers own their own helmets, and Lewis had to agree to letting his prized lid out of his keeping. Further, the helmet would be brought to a secret location where Mercedes keeps its stunning F1 heritage collection and we were sworn to secrecy about that (we’d love to tell you…) plus we would have only two hours. At last the helmet arrived, complete with Lewis’s PA and a security guard and warnings not to touch the inside or stick anything to it. It was daunting – but we’re pleased with the outcome, and grateful to Lewis for helping it happen.
