Ferrari's Ickx factor
Sir,
I would like to add something to your fine articles about Jacky Ickx in the January and February issues of Motor Sport. One has to notice that Ickx is the most successful Ferrari driver between 1950 and ’99. He is only overshadowed by the still-active Michael Schumacher.
Ickx only spent four-and-a-half seasons with Ferrari, and although he didn’t secure the Formula One title in that time, he did win seven Fl races (including the 1971 Jochen Rindt Memorial Race at Hockenheim) and nine sportscar events.
During his spell at Ferrari he almost added to his record tally of Le Mans wins; he and Brian Redman led the 1973 race until only 30min from the finish.
In fact this race, which was a classic duel between Matra and Ferrari, might be a very good subject for Motor Sport to cover some time in the future. Ickx, Redman, Arturo Merzario and Henri Pescarolo are still around, so…
