Monty Karlan doesn't bust

Monty Karlan and Stein Roed claimed victory on the seventh Monte Carlo Historic in early February. The Norwegians’ Volvo 142 scored a narrow victory over the Porsche 911S of American star John Buffum and Ralph Beckman on an event tackled by more than 300 crews. From five start points across Europe, the cars converged on Monaco for a series of regularity tests in the mountains.

French aces Jean Ragnotti and Erik Comas both entered Renault Alpine A11Os, but Comas retired on the closing leg and Ragnotti finished down in 252nd position.

Best of the UK contingent was the Mercedes 220SE of Philip Armstrong and Frank Hussey in 18th place

• Peter and Ann locks gave the Morris 1800 ‘Landcrab’ a rare international rally victory when they prevailed in the 15th Winter Challenge in January. They saw off an extremely tough challenge from the Alfa Romeo Giulietta of Dutch pairing Berk Dolk/Jan Berkhof.

This Classic Rally Association event finished in Monaco.
