Tripoli time warp

Sir,

I have been following with interest your Track Tests on circuits of old, and after Mark Hughes’ piece on the 1933 Tripoli GP, I wondered if you have information regarding the track in Mellaha. In its day it really was a state of the art place, and very fast I always thought it strange that nothing seemed to come out of Libya about whether it has survived or not, but the regime in power there seems to have stymied tourist type investigation.

Last year I heard a rumour that the track still existed with everything still in place, like a time warp. I did some checking with the person that was purported to have stumbled upon this amazing sight, but he could offer me no help with the truth about this.

Have you, or any readers, information as to whether the circuit exists? Unused since 1940, it may be unlikely, but it is a tantalising thought. Any information would be much appreciated, perhaps even a future Track Test there — now that would be wonderful…

(We’ll find out. If the circuit is still there and it is possible to get to, we’ll go. In the meantime, all information any reader may have would be gratefully received -ed)
