Delving again into Doug Nye’s stupendous history of BRM, which I regard as the motoring book of 1994, and noting that one of the drivers of the V16 cars was the late Ron Flockhart, I recalled an amusing memory of this keen racing driver and pilot. Hoping to get a test-drive in the Mercedes-Benz team he asked Motor Sport to forward his credentials to the great Alfred Neubauer, enclosing a very complete list of reasons for applying. Neubauer replied, saying the application would be considered, adding “but please inform Mr Flockhart that the colour of his eyes has no bearing on a person’s skills as a racing driver!”
