New cars in Brazil

Jacques Laffite drove the dumpy, new Gitanes-sponsored Ligier JS5 at Interlagos. Its debut marked the full-time return of Matra V12 power to the world of Grand Prix racing after an absence of three seasons. Right, we show another 12-cylinder newcomer, this time the 3-litre flat-12 Alfa Romeo engine which is fitted into the Martini Brabham BT35s. This engine won the World Championship for Makes in 1975. Below, John Watson made his debut in the March-inspired Penske PC3, while Mario Andretti (bottom) was given a one-off drive in the second Lotus 77.
