The charm of the big diesel

Sir,

Your correspondent is quite right—fitted in a really heavy car these have a character all of their own. The most popular conversion has been that of the Perkins famous P6. Built in thousands and used extensively during the war, especially for marine use, this rugged 6-cylinder engine developing over 85 b.h.p. has quite amazing reliability, although spares are readily obtainable. With no ignition or carburetter troubles possible the only care needed is to ensure absolutely clean fuel with a large extra filter, and of course the economy is quite fantastic!
