Cars and characters
Sir,
As an enthusiastic reader of your vintage columns, I have often heard say that an interest in vintage cars usually goes with a love of antique clocks, guns and other items of historical interest. I have a feeling that historical characters and historical cars go rather nicely together. Perhaps a few personalities could be withdrawn from the past centuries, so that one might imagine combinations like these:
Charles I and a G.N., Nero in his Bugatti La Royale, Francis Drake in a short-chassis Mark II Aston, Sir Thomas More at the wheel of a 40-h.p. Lanchester, Cromwell covering rugged battlefields in a Trojan, Titus Oates with his B.S.A. Combination and wicker chair, and even Turnip Townsend in a heavy 12/4.
Perhaps some imaginative readers can make additions to this V.S.C.C. historical ensemble.
D. C. H. Howard.
Brandon.
