Showroom Auction: Keep feeling faszination
From a Leichtbau Ruf to a film-star F1 racer, here’s Simon de Burton’s auction round-up
Gooding & Company
1989 RUF CTR Yellowbird
Sold by Gooding & Company, £4.7m
Digital technology, drones and YouTube may have taken filming to new heights but there are few examples of automotive footage to beat Faszination auf dem Nürburgring from 1989. The 20-minute promotional movie for Porsche tuning house Ruf showed Stefan Roser driving a twin-turbo CTR Yellowbird at 10/10ths around the circuit. It became a cultural icon, so it was inevitable that this car, one of 29 CTRs made, would fetch a fortune, especially since it was in ultimate Leichtbau specification. While it wasn’t. the actual ’Ring Yellowbird, it was definitely yellow.
1963 Jaguar MarK II
Sold by Historics auctioneers, £55,000
This beautifully presented Mark II was as much ‘go’ as ‘show’ having had a three-year £100,000 rebuild to create an evocation of the John Coombs-tuned Jags raced in period by stars such as Graham Hill.
2022 Maserati MC20
Sold by Collecting Cars, £116,500
Few could deny that the MC20 is among the best- looking of modern supercars but if this 14,000-mile example is anything to go buy, depreciation can be eye-watering. A new one starts at £222,000.
1973 MGB GT
Sold by Iconic Auctioneers, £14,625
More than £14,000 for a B GT might seem strong, but this one had been meticulously restored. As well as pristine paintwork and a flawless interior, it benefited from an 1860cc ‘fast road’ engine.
1972 Ford Escort Mexico
Sold by Historics auctioneers, £20,592
If you loved your Scalextric Mexico, you’ll have coveted this factory-built example with its 1600cc crossflow engine. Although well-equipped for historic rallying, the consigner used it as a road car.
1995 Aston Martin DB7
Sold by Iconic Auctioneers, £10,688
Anyone who thought Aston ownership would be beyond their means hadn’t predicted the fall in DB7 values. This one had covered only 73,000 miles and had a desirable manual gearbox.
1967 Porsche 911 S
Sold by RM Sotheby’s, price not revealed
Austrian star Jochen Rindt was given this 911 S in 1967, three years before he became Formula 1’s only posthumous champion. He is said to have used the car extensively in ’67 to travel to races.
2013 Mirage Lotus 77 Replica
Sold by Collecting Cars, £24,000
This odd-looking replica of Mario Andretti’s 1976 Japanese Grand Prix-winning car was created for, and used in, 2013 film Rush, about the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. It was powered by a 600cc Yamaha R6 motorcycle engine.

Bonhams, Milton Keynes, June 6-16
A burgeoning market for classic motorcycles has prompted Bonhams to add online sales to its regular, live events. This one will feature two-wheelers from across the spectrum, from a Honda ST70 ‘monkey bike’ estimated at £700-£1400 to one of the 29 Triumph Trident ‘Slippery Sam’ replicas built to mark the race bike’s five TT wins (1971-75).
Artcurial, Saint-Tropez, June 28
The Paris-based auction house heads to the sun for another of its glamorous auctions at Golf Club Saint-Tropez.
