CORONATION SAFARI RALLY

Alter protests from several of the rally crews the decision to award the first place to Mercedes was made after a Ford Zephyr was home first and only one minute late having travelled 3,000 miles of dust roads in tropical heat. The Zephyr had a broken silencer and broken shock-absorber seals and while the drivers A. T. and K. M. Kopperud argued that they had not broken the seals the stewards upheld their protest but this was later reversed. Speeding spoilt the chances of many teams and out of the 95 starters only 54 finished, many crashing en route and one even burned out. Winners of the Ladies’ class were Mrs. Wright, Miss June Wright and Mrs. Julia Burton driving a Zephyr while the winning Mercedes 219 was driven by Ken Savage and John Manussis of Nairobi.
