Missing lightweight E-type unearthed
One of the 12 lightweight E-types built by Jaguar has been unearthed in a Los Angeles garage. Unaccounted for since 1964 the car has languished all that time under boxes of household rubbish, and only emerged on the death of owner Howard Gidovlenko. Originally bought by Kjell Qvale, West Coast importer of British cars, who entered it in the 1963 Sebring 12 Hours, it then went to Gidovlenko for $5230. A fighter pilot with both RAF and USAF during the war, he later became a test pilot for the Bell X2 rocket-plane, as well as racing P51 Mustangs and tuning aero-engines. He rebuilt the Jaguar’s engine, but then the car lay forgotten until Jaguar specialist Terry Larson identified it. The car and unused spares go to the Monterey Sports Car Auction in August. GC
