The first half of the season has been an uphill struggle for the team which finished fifth in the 1992 championship and sixth last year. It was obliged to run the overweight I 07Cs until Spain, and the debut of the 109 was marked not only by the change in the regula

tions but also marred by the unpleasant accident that befell Pedro Lamy in a 107C at Silverstone during a test the previous week.

There is thus rather an air of false-start about the campaign with the new car, which has not helped to bolster flagging morale.
