With reference to G. I. Bigg’s correspondence in your May issue, the answer does of course lie with our former (and perhaps future?) mode of transport, the horse. Consequently in order to wield one’s sword, lance, halberd or what have you at one’s opponent it was preferential to pass to the left

Europeans and Americans merely wanted to be different or were pacifist.
