Le Mans 24 Hours
Drama at the Sarthe, above. Six minutes to go as Barth limps to the flag with the victorious Martini Porsche 936, smoke billowing from its stricken engine. Haywood and Ickx shared the dramatic win. Acropolis Rally
From a strong field of Toyotas Fords, Opels, Datsuns and Fiats, Ford Escorts sprung back to international reckoning n the Acropolis Rally when Björn Waldegard and Hans Thorszelius (above) followed their Safari win with another outright victory, with Roger Clark and Jim Porter second in another Escort. Third place went to Harry Kallstrom and Claes Billstam (below) in a works Datsun Violet, the Swedish driver now much quicker since his night vision improved with giving up smoking.
Monaco Grand Prix
Jody Scheckter’s rounds Rascasse (above) on its way to victory. Far left, Peterson leads Lauda, Hunt and Depailler up the hill from St. Devote. Centre left, Lauda and Laffite braking for Station Hairpin. Below, Mass fends off Andretti and Depailler Mirabeau. Andretti’s Lotus was fitted with one of the new Cosworth ment DFVs for this race, but he was unable to get past the determined Mass who hung on well to finish fourth. Right, Carlos Reutemann’s Ferrari is cornering at Rascasse on its way to third place.
Belgian Grand Prix
The opening laps of the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder on June 6th were conducted in conditions of streaming rain and spray. Above, Watson leads Andretti, Nilsson and Jody Scheckter away from the grid. Gunnar Nilsson saved the day for Lotus by taking his first F1 victory (top right) ahead of Niki lauda (Ferrari 312 T2), below. Ronnie Peterson’s Tyrrell (centre, right) is seen ahead of Mass on its way to third place, while Brambilla lleds Lauda through the chicane behins the pits (lower right). Pau Formula Two
Rene Arnoux (above) led the race from start to finish in his Martini-Renault. Eddie Cheever (left) in his RaIt-BMW heads De Dryver’s March and the Chevron of Riccardo Patrese. Lower left is the pole position-winning Chevron Hart driven by Patrick Tambay and below is the early fight between Giacomelli’s works March, Leclere in the Kauhsen car and Keke Rosberg’s Opert Chevron.
