A Speedwell Modified Mini
Speedwell are better known for their extensive conversions to B.M.C. cars, such as the 110-m.p.h. Riley Elf we tried a few months ago, but the bulk of their business is…
Through the Jordan Racing Team, father and son Mike, and Andrew Jordan both build and race Lotus Cortinas with success.
Mike explains: “We’ve built 15 Lotus Cortinas since we stopped doing touring cars and concentrated on historic racing – they are easy for us to build. But we’ve done so much development. When we started doing them, Andrew and I spent days at Goodwood trying everything under the sun.
“Five years ago we used to pay £3000-£4000 for an old shell. We’re now paying around £14,000-£15,000 for a shell that still needs some repairs. Most of them come in from abroad and most are left-hand drive that we then have to convert to right-hand drive. You can still buy a shell for £7000-£8000, but it will be rotten as hell and you’ll spend an extra fortune on re-panelling.
“They are fantastic to drive. You’ve got to have them up on their toes and dancing. We’ve had a few customers that have driven them initially, and not been comfortable with it moving around. You have to get your head around that you’ve just got to let it move and not kill the slide too early.”
