Cardinal sins

Sir,

Stephen Campbell is not the only person to be irritated by the anachronistic hippies at the Goodwood Revival (Letters, December issue). Period dress is rapidly becoming fancy dress. Among the howlers this year were a Cardinal in full robes, a World War I German officer, several Edwardian ladies and a chap straight from the desert with khaki shirt and shorts, and a pith helmet. Just the sort of thing you would have worn to the circuit in the ’50s and ’60s.

And what about the plethora of mechanics in white overalls? Surely this is the automotive equivalent of someone who goes to a fancy dress party with a bed sheet over his head, saying “I’m a ghost”.
