Reflections of a golden era
Vic Elford
About time. A major gap in motorsport bios has been plugged by David Bull, with the versatile Elford relating his life story in an engaging manner.
In addition to his more exalted exploits, it’s a pleasure to learn about the more obscure stuff: his time testing the Toyota 7 (would-be) Can-Am racer, being fired as team manager of ATS by the volatile Gunther Schmidt, caning a Subaru tiddler on the Paris-Dakar and introducing 17-year-old Juan Pablo Montoya to Sears Point. Though paper quality isn’t too hot, it’s excellent value and fun to dip into or absorb in one sitting. RH
