The Baja 1000

Through deserts, over mountains, along dried-up rivers, beaches and rocky plateaus, the Baja 1000 race meanders for nearly 1,000 miles through some of the world’s toughest and most beautiful terrain on the Baja Peninsula, Mexico. Run by SCORE (Short Course Off Road Enterprises), the annual Baja is the high point of the off-road racing season in the western USA. 47 motorcycles and 196 four-wheeled vehicles in 19 classes took part in last November’s race from Ensenada to La Paz. The winners, Larry Bosseler and Jack Johnson, shared a Henskvana motorcycle. The first four-wheeler home was a Dodge pick-up. The single-seater VW-powered specials shown here typify the Baja.
