The Sport in Australia
In Australia speed events have been held on public roads, with police approval — happy country! On October 7th last the V.S.C.C. held a 1/4-mile sprint, which received 11 entries of vintage cars. F.T.D. went to Crouch’s blower 4 1/2-litre Bentley in 17.6 sec. This beat a visitor’s Ford Bugatti, and an E-type “30/98” Vauxhall beat an O.E. “30/98,” both being trounced by a 3-litre Sunbeam. In the handicap, Perry’s Type 40 Bugatti was the victor, followed by Nicol’s blown f.w.d. Alvis. On October 11th the same club ran a speed hill-climb, again with 11 supporters. F.T.D. was by a V8 Ford-engined Riley, in 29.6 sec. Best vintage: Crouch (Bentley) in 31.1 sec. Electrical timing, microphone, telephone system, etc., were used by the V.S.C.C. of A., and the police again approved. The N.S.W.S.C.C. were due to use the same venue on December 9th.
