Professor Prost

Sir,

While not wishing to enter into a dispute with Giles Newton (Letters, January 2000) regarding the relative abilities of Hills senior and junior, having had the honour of witnessing both in action on many occasions, I feel it worth taking into account the view of someone who probably knows better than anyone how good Damon was.

I believe I’m correct in saying that when Alain Prost was lead driver at Williams, he tried to persuade the team to promote Damon to joint number one status. If ‘the professor’ at 13 in Mark Hughes’ table of great drivers and the winner of more Grands Prix than any other thinks he was that good, who am I to argue!

I AM, YOURS, ETC
