Whatever happened to OE221?
Whatever happened to 0E221?
Sir,
Mr John Dymond says 0E221 was wrecked by a 3 ton truck in 1943 (Letters, December, 1989). In fact, 1943 0E221 was stored under a dust sheet in Peasley’s Garages in Forbes, New South Wales. I know this because it was the first 30/98 I had ever seen and as a youthful owner of a 12/50 ducksback Alvis I used to lift the dust cover and admire it. It must have made a profound impression on me as within a couple of years I had bought my first 30/98 and have had one in the garage ever since.
0E221 was owned by a local pastoralist J J Leahy and, after the war, it was refurbished and used by his youngest son Gerald who in 1948 crashed it while avoiding a group of motorcyclists who came over the crest of a hill in line abreast. I have told this to the previous two owners and to David Marsh; so where the 3 ton truck in 1943 came from I cannot imagine. ALAN C WILSON Forbes, Australia
