A Tax on Possession
I read in the Northamptonshire Mercury & Herald that Mr. Fowler, the Minister of Transport, is considering scrapping the vehicle road tax and introducing instead a tax on the possession of a car.
This would have to be paid whether the car’s used or not, and whether it was on the road or laid up in a garage for the winter or for restoration. If the above is true, then I think we should oppose it strongly. I am sure many readers of Motor Sport own more than one car, and lay them up for the winter or for restoration. Also many People I know own perhaps five or six cars but can only afford to run perhaps two at any one time.
Also what about the position of private museums or collections, or even garages which sell or hold large stocks of cars.
I think it is wrong that we should pay tax on a car which is unused in our own garage, and I would like your readers’ views on this subject.
I would hope Motor Sport would protest strongly against this tax.
