NASCAR Lady Driver

The cover of a recent issue of the Nascar Newsletter—official organ of South America’s National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing—carries a picture captioned “Another Speedway Queen.” It depicts 22-year-old Miss Martha Rae Williams in a swim-suit. We gather that Miss Williams will compete at Daytona Beach next month as “Miss Coastal Speedway” in the Nascar finals—hence, perhaps, the swimming costume. Some technical details are quoted –132 lb., 5 ft. 9¾ in., 37-24-37, but we confess we cannot derive from these what car Miss Williams proposes to drive.

The Wessex Fuel Economy Pack for the Volkswagen consists of a Mangoletsi manifold modifier, smaller carburetter choke tube, a full set of economy jets, a gasket and fitting instructions. It is said that fitting takes only half-an-hour and the set is available, at 50s., from the West Essex Engineering Co. Ltd., Abridge, Essex. We have not had an opportunity of testing this set, but the makers claim improved bottom-end flexibility, a drop of 7 m.p.h. in normal maximum speed, but a petrol saving of 20 per cent. Driving carefully, they claim to get over 50 m.p.g. with a VW in London traffic.
