A REVOLUTION IN SILENCER DESIGN/
THE BURGESS STRAIGHT THROUGH SILENCER APPLIES ENTIRELY NEW PRINCIPLES TO THE SILENCING OF AUTOMOBILE EXHAUSTS . . .
HITHERTO ENGINEERS HAVE CONCENTRATED on muffling exhaust noise by the restriction of out-flowing gases. This restriction sets up back-pressure.
THE POWER LOSS FROM BACK-PRESSURE in some exhaust systems after a short period of use is very high. Over-heating, poor acceleration and HEAVY PETROL CONSUMPTION result.
The BURGESS STRAIGHT THROUGH system reduces the intensity of sound waves by absorption. The illustration above clearly shows the straight-through central perforated pipe, free of baffle-plates or other restrictive elements, but surrounded by a heat resisting acoustic filling which permits the expansion of gas and absorbs the sound waves.
The BURGESS SILENCING SYSTEM as fitted to the ALVIS range combines freedom from back-pressure with efficient silencing.
