The 1961 Monaco Grand Prix was a classic, but none of the racers pictured nee could get the better of ‘Golden Boy’ Moss
ROBIN POWELL
Isle of Wight man Mr Powell describes his trip to the 1961 Monaco GP as “one of the most exciting expeditions of my life”. He travelled to the race with an old school friend and fellow Healey Silverstone owner, and asks if anyone knows the whereabouts of his car ‘EFV 28′? {1} Graham Hill’s BRM tracks Phil Hill’s Ferrari 156 through the Gasworks Hairpin. Graham was out on lap 12 with a broken fuel pump drive. {2} Phil Hill’s ‘Sharknose’ chased Stirling Moss’s winning Lotus 18 for much of the race, before team-mate Richie Ginther relegated him to third. {3} Dan Gurney’s Porsche 718 trailed Moss and the Ferraris in fifth. {4} Moss and Gurney exit Gasworks. Mr Powell was witnessing one of the great Grand Prix performances.
