Pendine's LSR memories
The death, 75 years ago, of Parry Thomas at Pendine Sands in the 27-litre Thomas Special ‘Babs’ has prompted a booklet called Capt Campbell & Mr Thomas, by Lynn Hughes (Golden Grove, Danybont, Cwm-Mawr, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire SA14 7AD, £4.75).
In 63 landscape pages it tells of the Land Speed Record at the Welsh beach. Most of the illustrations I had seen previously, but some of Thomas not so, and also new to me is a fresh item which may be another clue to the cause of Thomas’s fatal crash. Indeed, this is an interesting account of two top British LSR rivals.
In recent times ‘Babs’ has been housed in the Pendine Museum of Speed, which had 22,000 visitors this year, but is closed for the winter.
