Eagles' peaceful, easy feeling
Shirtsleeves and temperatures in the mid 70s was a welcome backdrop to the Historic Sports Car Club’s Finals Day at Silverstone in mid-October. Strong grids and excellent racing completed the picture.
Several battles were settled, the first being in favour of Mike Eagles, who secured the Historic Roadsports honours in his rare Australian-built Milano GT.
Mark Ashworth lifted the Classic Sports Car series I crown while Ed Mercer recorded his first race win since 1986 to bag the Classic Racing Car series title. Mercer and Ian Jones crossed the line in exactly the same time, though officials judged Mercer the winner.
Racing returnee Steven Arnold (Chevron B19) won the last-ever RJB Thundersports race while the outcome of the Historic Racing Saloon Car event left Simon Garrad and Graeme Dodd tied on points.
This series ended a week afterwards at Snetterton, both men sharing the title because, amazingly, they were inseparable on tie-break rules.
