Congratulations and Commiserations

Although Nelson Piquet did not finish at Suzuka he is now World Champion for the third time, having previously taken the title in 1981 and 1983.

He thus equals the Formula One achievements of Sir Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda, although still two below par to Fangio. On behalf of all MOTOR SPORT readers, we offer Piquet heartiest congratulations . . .

Having said that, commiserations must be offered to Nigel Mansell, who was eliminated by a crash during the first practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix when the Championship, with all its glittering prizes, could have been within his grasp. Even the best racing drivers make errors of judgement , and the harder they drive the greater excuse there is. Mansell will no doubt be charging as hard as ever next year.
