French Education

I read with much interest the article by Also Henry on Jacques Laffite and Jean-Pierre Jabouille in last month’s issue. I must confess to a moment of extreme discomfort to learn that Jacques went to the school at Nogaro: like just about every-one who is any one in French racing — ironically Jabouille was just about the one driver who did not come to either of our schools) — they all started at either Magny-Cours or Paul Ricard. The reason that Jacques sports Winfield on his helmet harks back to the early days when we sponsored him in F3 for a season, awarding him the Winfield Trophy at that time, and he never forgot it! As you say, he is a charming and delightful man, and I know he would be most upset with me if I did not put the record straight on his behalf, Ascot, Berks. MIKE KNIGHT
