Alex Henshaw

Alex Henshaw

I was interested to read your appreciation of Alex Henshaw’s “Flight of the Mew Gull” in the current issue of MOTOR SPORT. In the later stages of the war I visited Castle Bromwich factory and airfield and there I saw a Spitfire new off the production line. It was taken up on its initial (test) flight by the unorthodox method of winding up the undercart and continuing flying at the same altitude! I was told the pilot was Alex Henshaw, and that he commuted between his home (near Oxford) and Castle Bromwich by air, even on occasions for lunch. Torthorwald V. LUDFORD-BROOKS
