It’s been a big year for Ferrari, so spend more time celebrating than searching for cover for your classic by heading to Goodwood Classic Solutions.
It was the moment we all secretly wanted to see, but also not really what the majority of us expected. After being largely thrashed by Toyota in the opening rounds of the World Endurance Championship, Ferrari’s 499P Hypercar took the chequered flag more than 80sec clear to win the Le Mans 24 Hours. The result made headline news, so it’s a good time for Ferrari fans and owners alike. With the sun shining, it’s time to get the old girl out of the garage, especially if it has a Le Mans link.
Ferrari’s 330 moniker may be best known for its racing variants but the 330 P range of the 1960s and ’70s (so named because they used the same engine) wouldn’t have come into existence without the pretty road-going 2+2.
Powered by Gioacchino Colombo’s masterpiece 4-litre V12, Ferrari launched its GT coupé in 1963. Sharing its chassis with the 275, the 330 was a sleek, front-engined cruiser, and it would go on to spawn the desirable GTC and drop-top GTS from 1967. These cars brought a new level of refinement to Ferrari, with the V12 matched by superior damping and interior upgrades leading the press to label it as “the first Ferrari in which you could enjoy the radio”.
Over time, the 330 has become one of the more overlooked classic Ferraris, put in the shade by the 250s, 365 GTB and more modern models like the F355 and Testarossa. But few of these cars enjoy the Le Mans link quite like the original 330. Ferrari did create a small run of LMB race cars, but they didn’t see much action thanks to the company’s switch to mid-engined layouts for racing. So, when Mauro Forghieri went looking for a powerplant to propel his new breed of prototypes, the answer was sat there in the 330.
Best to preserve this bit of history with some easy-to-access insurance.
