A superbly measured drive, blending good pace on track and in the stages, netted victory on the seventh Tour Britannia for John Clark and Emma-Jane Gilbart-Smith in their Porsche 911. Over three days Clark (left) withstood pressure as the route took in far more special stage mileage than before. Four tests on the infamous Epynt ranges and four in the site at Caerwent meant that, for the first time, the event was won and lost on the stages and not the race track. Clark led after two runs through the Cwm Cam forest
drive and stayed ahead to the concluding race at Silverstone 56 hours later. But had Danny Sullivan not slid off in Epynt in the Porsche 911RSR he shared with Chip Connor, the 1985 Indy 500 winner could have prevailed. That error cost Sullivan and Connor four minutes but they finished less than a minute behind Clark. “It’s a fabulous place and I loved it,” said Sullivan of Epynt. “There were plenty of challenges and we had two offs in Caerwent on Sunday morning,” reported Clark. Nick Whale and Philip Walker (Jaguar E-type) completed the podium. Paul Lawrence
