NO AMOUNT OF PEUGEOT PLANNING COULD DENY AUDI
EXCELLENT DINNER AT THE RAC to wish Peugeot bonne chance at Le Mans. Stung by the freak engine failures that robbed it of an apparent certain win last year, the team was taking no chances in 2011. Eight 30-hour tests, equivalent to 10 24-hour races, ensured its cars and the private ORECA machine made the finish, filling the first five spots save the one it wanted. But Peugeot can’t begrudge Audi its victory. With two of its three cars taken out in shocking accidents all the pressure was on the remaining R18, but its drivers resorted to no questionable tactics to stay ahead, unlike some of the Peugeot crew in their bid to keep it behind. In the end justice was done and, in the face of immense opposition, the quicker car from the beffer team won. See report, p22
