VSCC, Oulton Park
June 10
Despite worries over rear dampers, Mark Gillies retained the Hawthorn Spanish Trophy in ERA R3A during the VSCC’s annual foray to Oulton Park. But his win was far tougher than a year ago, as Duncan Ricketts and Barrie Baxter challenged.
In the early laps, Gillies was patient as Baxter in the Tec-Mac Maserati and Ricketts in Mac Hulbert’s ERA R4D slogged it out in fine style. But R4D then spun out with a gearbox problem and Baxter struggled for a gear as Gillies shot ahead.
Another fine contest raged in the HGPCA pre-66 race as Rod Jolley drove a masterful race to win after going wheel to wheel with Barry Cannell (leading right) and Malcolm Ricketts for lap after lap.
Ian Landy had to contend with James Baxter’s charging Frazer Nash before winning the Boulogne Trophy in ERA R6B. Less than half a second split them at the flag.
Jamie McIntyre picked his way through the 1950s sportscar pack in his splendid Rejo, easing ahead of Rupert Whyte’s Lotus 11 to win.
