Biennial Le Mans classic
There will be a new historic event at Le Mans in July 2002, and every two years thereafter. The Historic 24 Hours of Le Mans will be a series of races for cars raced at the Sarthe circuit from 1923 to 1975. Organised by the Automobile Club de UOuest (ACO) and Patrick Peter, the event will target famous names and famous cars within the 300-strong entry.
The plan is to run 20 forty-minute races in a 24-hour period for five groups of cars. Cars must be models that competed at Le Mans in period and they will be divided into five groups of around 60 cars each, giving two pre-war and three post-war fields. Priority will be given to cars with a proven Le Mans history.
