Warning Words
Sir,
I read with interest your warning words to those thinking of using a vintage-type car. My British Salmson will certainly cruise at 50 all day, and that with a saloon car backaxle ratio — ie 5.2:1. I will soon have a higher ratio fitted and expect to cruise at something very near to 55 mph.
The gear change is not heavy — it is a delight, and I have spent many happy days driving to far-off rallies.
The power-to-weight ratio of the British Salmson is, of course, poor compared with modern cars, but this does not seem to matter much when cruising on the open road. My car has a replica body (self built) and thus I am open to a few “not original” sneers, but the people who level these sarcasms seem unable to change a plug for themselves if their modern tinware breaks down.
In fact, I am one of those who disagree with running only modern cars and so am truly ready for the VSCC; I have been a member for years!
Aldershot PETER PERRY
