Alvis 12/60
Sir,
I entered the Alvis 12/60 for the forty-minute thrash and the Alvis race at VSCC, Silverstone, and after arriving safely (no trailer) and practising satisfactorily, was anticipating a good afternoon’s sport. The car (not highly tuned) was going well and had never given any trouble despite its very active life. Unfortunately, the half shaft sheared on leaving the pits after a compulsory pit stop in Event 1, and although a spare was found within minutes and several 12/60 people gave assistance, I was unable to start in the Alvis race.
However, I was able to drive home and, as you have said, this is part of the enjoyment. In appalling weather conditions and with one stop for petrol and one stop to attend to nature, I covered the 109 miles home to Shropshire in two hours. I am sure other owners can match this performance and we could, perhaps, include the Alvis with those other fine vintage makes you mention, Frazer Nash, Vauxhall and Bentley.
