Recent racing results

Last month we reported that Denny Hulme had won the first round of the Can-Am series with the latest McLaren M20, but only after a scare from Mark Donohue’s turbo-charged Porsche 917/10. On July 9th the second round of the series was held and this time the Penske Porsche did win but with George Follmer driving and not Donohue who had crashed and injured his knee in unofficial practising. Hulme was chasing Follmer and pulled out to pass on the main straight when the car virtually took off and flipped over backwards, not the first car to do so at Road Atlanta. Peter Revson and Jack Oliver also retired, as did Can-Am first timer Francois Cevert, so Gregg Young was second in his ex-works 1971 McLaren and Milt Minter third in his un-turbo-charged Porsche.

In Formula Two the two most recent European Championship races as we go to press, Rouen on June 23rd and Osterreichring on July 9th, have both produced almost identical results. In each case victory has gone to Emerson Fittipaldi’s Lotus 69 chased hard in the early stages by Mike Hailwood’s Surtees with Carlos Reutemann (Rondel Brabham) third and Dave Morgan’s similar private car fourth on each occasion.

At the Osterreichring there was also an Interserie race which provided a lucky win for Howden Ganley’s BRM after the turbo-charged Porsches of Kauhsen and Kinnunen had trouble. But a week later at Hockenheim Kinnunen scored an easy win.
