An Excellent Universal Hammer
We have commented previously on the excellence of Thor hammers and now a very useful new Thorlite soft-faced hammer set has been announced.
Briefly, this patented hammer comprises an aluminium head of barrel-shape with a screwed peg at each end onto which rubber faces of four different shapes can readily be screwed. The strong ash handle fits securely into the tapered “eye” of the head. Every detail of this Thorlite set is claimed to be the result of extensive tests over the past two years, and the following particulars are given of the main features :-
1. The screwed pegs on the aluminium head are entirely enclosed in the sockets, the walls of which take all the strain of heavy blows; and also prevent damage to the screw-thread in the rubber faces. These non-projecting pegs give safety with long-life, for faces can be worn down completely to the head without damaging the work, and before any replacement of face is necessary.
2. The faces of flat, dome, cone and wedge shapes, are moulded from a new grade of rubber which has been made especially for maximum durability and toughness. All faces are interchangeable, hence the most suitable shape can be selected for any particular application, though the flat and domed faces will normally be used.
3. The fitting of this handle is also new for whilst it can be detached easily by giving a smart tap on the end of the handle, it is self-tightening in use. The advantages of this feature are that different lengths of handle can be used, e.g., a short handle for close-up work in a confined space, or a long handle for heavy, unrestricted blows; and that with the handle removed, this hammer will fit into most tool-rolls and tool-kits. The 12in handle supplied as standard is ideal for most jobs, but shorter or longer handles are available.
Thus, this Thorlite soft-faced hammer set is an essential tool for motorists who do their own maintenance and minor repairs such as removing dents, straightening bumpers, fitting tyres and many other light hammering jobs; and an indispensable tool for sports car enthusiasts, converters, builders and panel-beaters whose hammer blows must not damage or mar the part struck. Safety to the user is a further advantage of “soft” hammers, for steel hitting steel is dangerous, and many accidents are caused by flying chips of steel.
The standard set comprises the hammer-head and handle with four interchangeable rubber faces of 2 in. diameter. The hammer weighs 1 1/2 lb., with any two faces, and the price of the complete set, in strong carton, is 19s. 6d., retail. Additional faces, or handles, can be supplied as required. Most garages and tool-shops stock Thor hammers; in case of difficulty contact the Thor Hammer Co., Ltd., Highlands Road, Shirley, Birmingham, who will supply MOTOR SPORT readers direct, paying the postage.
