Good things

The Ferguson F.1 car is one of the better British things and we offer congratulations to those whose faith in it looks like being justified. It has shown great promise on merely its second race.

Praise is also due to D. Hobbs for racing so successfully cars endowed with the Hobbs’ automatic gearbox. From an unsuitable Morris-Oxford saloon so endowed, this driver went on to prove his firm’s transmission in Jaguar XK140 and Lotus Elite cars, the latter winning its class in the sports-car category of the arduous Nürburgring 1,000 kilometres race this year. For such an improbable component to survive in racing is unusual, so much credit is due to the Hobbs Transmission people of Leamington Spa. If any manufacturer is looking for a good automatic box he could not do better than follow Borgward’s lead and use Hobbs. Incidentally, a F.1 car with Hobbs transmission is rumoured for 1962. Interesting!
