Andretti drives British forces
Indianapolis star and 1978 F1 World Champion Mario Andretti drove an Indycar on UK soil to thank British forces for their support in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Andretti drove a two-seat Indycar at RAF Honington, Suffolk in January, giving 180mph rides to personnel as part of a 10day Indy Car 500 Centennial goodwill tour visiting US bases in Europe and Iraq. Fellow Indy winner Johnny Rutherford attended, while Al Unser Jr also joined the team on the 16,000-mile tour, which visited a US aircraft carrier. As well as boosting morale, the trip celebrated the Indy 500’s centenary.
