Brabham chance

Competitive historic racer stars at Bonhams’ Race Retro sale

1 Tasman Brabham

Bonhams will put up a Brabham BT11A at its sale at Race Retro at Stoneleigh on March 24. The Tasman variant of the BT11 grand prix car, which ran in period with the 2.7-litre Coventry Climax FPF engine, is expected to fetch between £110,000 and £140,000. Also on the bill are a Lotus XI (estimate £80,000-£90,000), a Formula Atlantic-spec Brabham BT35 (£27,000-£30,000) and a F5000 Lola T142 originally raced in South Africa by Jackie Pretorius (£32,000-£36,000). 2 Campbell’s cream

A fascinating lost collection of glass ‘magic lantern’ slides featuring Sir Malcolm Campbell is coming up for auction in the Cheffins sale at The Saleground, Sutton, near Ely, Cambs, on April 21. Images of record attempts, a young Donald sitting in his father’s Bluebird and even a treasure-hunting trip to the Cocos Islands are among the slides which recently emerged from a garage clearout. 3 Red wedge

An ex-NART Ferrari 512S is the star lot at the Legenda e Passione Auction at Maranello to be held by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby’s on May 20. The car, driven by Sam Posey and Ronnie Bucknum in the 1970 Sebring 12 Hours shortly after it was delivered, is said to be one of the most original examples around. Among the other lots is a 1997 ex-Schumacher F1 Ferrari. Tel: 020 7293 6336

4 Aston auction

A 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT – a lightweight, and the last built and sold by Aston Martin – went for an astonishing £650,000 at RM’s Arizona sale on January 19. The headlining 1983 Le Mans-winning Porsche 956 failed to sell though, after the bidding stalled not far south of a million pounds.
