Benny Parsons

Former NASCAR Winston Cup champion Benny Parsons recently lost his battle against cancer, aged 66.

The former taxi driver started racing in 1964, and his NASCAR title came at the expense of Richard Petty in 1973. Parsons added victory in the Daytona 500 in 1975 and won 21 NASCAR races during a 24-year career.

He finally retired from racing at the end of 1988, but then carved a very successful career as a hugely popular broadcaster, first with ESPN. In 1996 he won an Emmy award for his work as a NASCAR
expert commentator.
