Niki Lauda scores 20th GP win in South Africa (above), beating McLaren team-mate Alain Prost. Mike Thackwell wins European F2 season-opener at Thruxton. His Ralt Honda team-mate Roberto Moreno prevails at Hockenheim two weeks later.

James Hunt and Hesketh claim maiden Formula One triumph in International Trophy at Silverstone (above). Tyrrell unveils Derek Gardner’s new 007. Alain Cudini’s Alpine wins first round of European two-litre sportscar championship at Paul Ricard.

Roy Salvadori fails to catch Alan Brown’s Cooper-Bristol (above) after a brief ‘off’ in the BRDC British Empire Trophy sportscar race at Oulton Park. Mike Hawthorn suffers burns when his Ferrari catches alight after an accident at the Syracuse GP.
1929
British-born Bugatti driver Williams takes victory in the inaugural Monaco GP (above). He battles with Rudolf Caracciola, but the Mercedes-Benz is delayed by pitstops, which allows Georges Bouriano’s Bugatti through to take second place.
