V-E-V Odds & Ends., April 1975
We are informed that the 5th International Veteran Car Rally, the Ostrava 75, is to take place in Czechoslovakia from June 27th to 29th for cars of all ages down to 1940. Entry forms are available from the Veteran CC Ostrava, PO Box 139, 728 39 Ostrava 1, but with the prevailing cost of motoring one wonders whether anyone will go from this country.
Having hired a, pre-war Standard tourer with pre-selector gearbox, when his 1926 Clyno sheared its magneto-drive coming home from Silverstone in the 1950s, which he regarded as a rare model even then, the Editor was interested to see a 1933 Standard Big Nine saloon with this kind of transmission advertised for sale in Hampshire recently.
Curiously, it was from the magazine of the enthusiastic Malaysian and Singapore Vintage Car Register that we learned of Hugh Bergel taking his re-test with the Advanced Motorists Association in his 1926 Type 35 GP Bugatti, giving hand signals and pumping up pressure with the Examiner beside him. Not only did he pass, but the Examiner said he enjoyed the ride, having happy memories of being in the Police Force when they kept a 4 1/2-litre Bentley at Hendon Police School.
