Letters from readers, April 1943
Sir,
I quote below a passage from a letter which I have just received from a fellow enthusiast in the Forces:
“I saw a training film last night dealing with all kinds of anti-tank tactics. Imagine my chagrin when I saw a roadblock based on several old cars, one of which was a 3-litre Van den Plas “Red Label” Bentley. There was no mistaking the slope of the front wings and the shallow doors, etc. A few minutes later a tank ran into it and gradually ground it to scrap-iron. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the old car had died repelling tanks in a real attack, but to be ingloriously done to death in a mere training film (incidentally, showing how not to arrange a road-block) seems a bit hard.”
I own a 3-litre Bentley and my friend aspires to purchase a blower-4.5, and I thought the above would perhaps find many sympathisers in Motor Sport, which I await each month.
I am, Yours etc.,
Stanley Sedgwick.
